| These cottages in North Barrack Road run at right-angles
to the main row of houses on the north side. They are also about
2m below the level of the road. The buildings in the background
are part of the East Barracks, now converted into luxury housing.
The cottage with the "For Sale" sign in front used to belong
to my daughter.
According to the 1898 street directory, Vale Cottages were numbered from 1 to 11. You may be able to see from the picture that there are 4 cottages in the block on the left and 6 on the right; there seems to be one missing. Examination of the brickwork would suggest that, contrary to what one might expect, the extra cottage was probably on the end of the right-hand block, making that seven cottages. If anybody can throw any light on this, we would be pleased to hear from you. |
