Alkham

Alkham
Alkham Village from the top of the cricket green

The tiny village of Alkham nestles in a hollow in the middle of the Alkham Valley, between Dover and Folkestone.  The main picture shows the church, the pub and the little cluster of cottages that form the heart of the village.

It was here that several of my ancestors lived and worked.  Birket Beer lived here in the village in 1720 when he married Elizabeth Bowes.  Benjamin Holmans kept sheep at Chalksole farm, on top of the hill behind the village.

This beautiful old farmhouse stands a few yards from the village centre on the road to Hougham.

The Nailbourne viewed from the Hougham road - Summer 2000.  Nailbournes are occasional streams that only flow in times of exceptionally high rainfall.  At other times, they may entirely dry up.

This is the Nailbourne as seen from the opposite side of the road, as it passes beside the Village Hall.

In the autumn and winter of 2000, Kent experienced rainfall well above average.  See here for pictures of the Nailbourne and Alkham cricket pitch after the floods.
