St. Leonard's, Upper Deal

The parish church of Deal and, for centuries, the only church in Deal, St Leonard's dates back to the 12th century.  It has been much altered and extended.

St. George's, High Street

The civic church of Deal.  Built originally as a Chapel of Ease.  Several important local residents are buried here.  Click here for a brief history of the church and some pictures of the inside of the building as it is today (June 2001)

St. Andrew's West Street

St Andrew's is the Sailors' church, built on the site of the old Union Workhouse.

Trinity Church, Union Street

This modern structure on the corner of Union Street and West Street replaced a much grander Victorian church on the same site.  The Wesley Hall adjoining the church dates from the time of the original building.  Behind the hall, the old Methodist School has been converted into luxury houses.

Congregational, High Street

The Congregational Church on the corner of High Street and Union Road has been redundant for several years and has been converted into the Landmark Community Centre.   It is a popular venue for craft fairs, wedding receptions, etc., and has a members-only bar.

Victoria Baptist, Victoria Road

The Victoria Baptist Church on the corner of Victoria Road and Stanley Road was built to serve Victoria Town, which grew up in the 1860s on the site of the old Deal Naval Dockyard.

Lower Walmer, The Strand

The church of St. Saviour, Lower Walmer, stands in the Strand, opposite Walmer Green, near the lifeboat station and the Memorial Bandstand.

Royal Marines Chapel, South Barracks

Please excuse the quality of these pictures - this was the best view available of the church in the South Barracks until the wire came down.  We have now added some close-up pictures of this church to our memorial site.

Royal Marines Chapel, North Barracks

The North Barrack Chapel is accessible because it is the site of the permanent memorial garden to those who were killed in the bombing.

Walmer Baptist, Dover Road

Sacred Heart (RC), Dover Road

The Sacred Heart church was originally part of a monastery, which occupied the land immediately behind the church (on the right of the picture).

Old St. Mary's, Church Street

The Duke of Wellington regularly attended services here when he was Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports.  Behind the church (to the right of the picture) are the ruins of an old fortified manor house.  More information and pictures here.

New St Mary's, St Mary's Road

The new St Mary's Church was built to cope with the rapidly growing population of Walmer in the mid 1800s.
